Overview
I assisted in operating and maintaining the automated system platforms for high throughput compound processing and aided in conducting quality control checks to verify the integrity of automated liquid handlers to maintain high standards. I engaged in activities that included the preparation, storage and distribution of compounds used in drugs screening, discovery and development processes.
Skills
I have learnt new skills in operating and handling very technical equipment like the liquid handlers, utilising various software tools to analyse data related to compound inventory, processing and usage and gained insights on procedures relating to analytical development. I have also improved on my already existing skills which includes pipetting, data analysis and reporting, cell cloning and purification and compound/drug assay processes.
Responsibilities
Yes I was. I was appointed a project that had to do with the end result being a presentation which I has to give on my project. I was also given the responsibility of creating calibration tables for the volume check machines on the liquid handling platforms to ensure accurate volume measurements.
Support & Guidance
I was appointed a line manager, a buddy and a mentor; these people supported me as I navigated my internship. I was able to discuss and receive advice from them about my work activities and also about my academics and any future job prospects I intend to pursue. We were able to chat on a personal level and I enjoyed my conversations with them as it helped us in getting to know each other better.
Culture
Everyone was very welcoming and engaging, I liked the lunch room with all the free light foods. Whenever I had shadowing sessions, the researchers were receptive to my questions and curiosity and were always eager to show me the work they undertake. I was always encouraged to never shy away from asking questions about things I do not understand and social events were organised for all staffs, apprentices interns and placement students to attend and socialise.
Your Impressions
It was an amazing experience, getting to expand on my knowledge of lab-based practices , working with machines and equipment I didn't have access to in university, conducting my own minor project and also contributing even in a minor way to research and development was very important to me and I appreciate the opportunity I had to do so.
Yes
I was able to receive this internship opportunity while having only the experiences I had from university and volunteering so do not worry about needing a stellar CV (though that is an advantage as well), the interviews are where your competence to work and learn will be mostly evaluated. Be openminded about gaining new experiences and your passion for research and development, research about the company and it's achievements in preparation for the interview
