Overview
On a day-to-day basis, I was given tasks to complete by my trainee buddies and supervisors. For example, I had the chance to conduct legal research, draft a letter to a client, analyse a title register, and assist with the due diligence process. We also took part in 'Lunch and Learn' sessions to learn more about topics such as how to build your personal brand, innovation, and the inclusion networks at the firm. There was even a social painting event where we were able to network with trainees.
Skills
During the scheme, I developed my legal research skills to make sure that I was only picking out the pertinent information. I also developed my analytical skills and my ability to digest complex legal jargon through the various tasks I was assigned. The socials and coffee chats developed my networking and active listening skills, and I also learnt about the importance of organisation, as I was often given multiple tasks to complete at the same time, which I had to juggle alongside the networking opportunities.
Business Insight
Throughout the scheme, we were able to gain a detailed insight into the role of a trainee solicitor at the firm. I learnt a lot more about the work involved, the seat allocation process, the difficulties in the NQ market, and secondment opportunities, as well as the firm's diversity, innovation, and pro bono initiatives.
Culture
Dentons is an extremely friendly and collaborative firm. Everyone is so willing to take time out of their day to help out or have a quick chat. I remember one instance in particular where I needed help with setting up a document using the right template, but both my supervisor and trainee buddy were preoccupied with some work. A senior associate I had only met once walked up to me and offered to help without me even having to ask, which I appreciated immensely.
Your Impressions
Immensely! While the scheme was definitely challenging at times as the work often involved things which I had never encountered before, the insight I gained was invaluable and it was an amazing opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge about being a commercial lawyer at Dentons. It was an incredibly fun opportunity and I really enjoyed getting to meet everyone to build my network.
Yes
Be specific to Dentons. Make sure to research beyond the careers webpage and to understand the values and unique selling points of the firm. I found the Instagram page really helpful to gain exclusive insights, and definitely attend law fairs or reach out to people on LinkedIn to better develop your understanding of the firm. Also sign up to Dentons.Next Talent for exclusive events hosted by the firm. Remember to be yourself and talk about your personal interests because, at the end of the day, interviewers remember you as a person, with a life outside of work. Make sure to also brush up on your commercial awareness and what makes you resilient.
