Overview
During the placement, I was part of the warehouse management team, responsible for warehouse operations. Key objectives were around Safety, People, Operation, Culture, and Cost. As a section leader I was responsible for managing the intake, pick or out-load process. Daily tasks included conducting shift briefings, safety walk-rounds, performance management and and handling general HR responsibilities, such as processing holiday requests, addressing payroll queries, and participating in absence and disciplinary meetings and investigations. Throughout the placement, I had several opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and contribute to the operational plans that drive the overall performance of the site.
Skills
During my placement with Gist, I worked in a section leader and shift manager position, also covering for the warehouse operations manager when required. This has allowed me to develop my leadership and team management skills at varying levels of responsibility, enhancing my leadership versatility and readiness for senior roles. Five of the key skills I developed in these roles were teamworking, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving, resilience and emotional intelligence.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was given real responsibility throughout my placement. Examples include managing a section of the warehouse, taking ownership for the daily plan and representing the warehouse in planning meetings at site. Particularly during peak periods, there was an opportunity to take on more responsibility and make decisions that had a big impact on customer service.
Support & Guidance
Lots of support from a varied network of colleagues including: Line manager, HR Manager, Mentor, Buddy and Early Careers lead. Weekly catch-ups with manager and HR to discuss development both professionally and personally. Personalised development plan which was adapted throughout based on progress.
Culture
Friendly, welcoming and open-door culture at site. Company values (PACE) definitely core to managing the warehouse. High-performing site which is always good to be part of a winning as a team culture.
Your Impressions
Thoroughly enjoyed the experience as it provided me with an opportunity to take on real responsibility and contribute to the teams success. Both challenging and rewarding.
