Overview
I was a summer vacation scheme student. I primarily support colleagues in my team with tasks across various clients. This includes note-taking for client briefings, preparing follow-up communications, engaging with industry-specific training, analysis payroll data, calling tax authorities to clarify issues on behalf of clients, and working on external-facing publication content. Clients were F500 firms, as well as both inbound and outbound individuals.
Skills
I've improved my Excel skills dramatically, and I have also learned how to utilise both in-house and external taxation software. I have also learned a lot about the tax regime in the United Kingdom. I've also improve my soft skills in communication, networking, and presentation. I engaged with other summer vacation scheme students, all members of my team, as well as across business lines.
Responsibilities
It was initially quite hard to get work. This is because there is a lot of onboarding that was needed for me to have access to the right information. Once I had settled in, I received a good level of responsibility and work. It was not too much that I was overwhelmed, but it engaged me on many different fronts.
Support & Guidance
I received ample support and guidances from colleagues in my team. My People Leader was very understanding and supportive, and I felt that I could sincerely believe that they would fight my corner. My team colleagues would guide me throughout any responsibilities I was given, and would almost always include detailed instructions on what I should do.
Culture
Overall, there is a great variety in company culture and general atmosphere across Deloitte. Some areas are much more stressful and don't have the most healthy culture, but others are great. Within the Tax business line, my team was immensely supportive and I felt like I could go to them with questions as a summer vacation scheme student.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my summer vacation scheme with Deloitte. Throughout the whole process, I was able to get a good understanding not just of the firm's culture, but the culture of the team I was placed within. I was exposed to various aspects of my potential future job. My colleagues gave me a good understanding of what to expect as a graduate, and what progression would look like.
Yes
I would highly recommend applying for the early careers programmes that Deloitte runs. Apply for their spring weeks and their summer vacation schemes. While it's no guarantee (and as long as you are willing to learn/a decent person), you're likely to enjoy it. At the berg least, you're likely to learn something new and figure out your path. The people I encountered were very willing to teach new hires.
