    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Role is project based. Task may differ from day to day. Daily task includes building and maintaining automations on SharePoint pages and PowerBIs. For other tasks, they might include meeting with different shareholders, investigation of solutions, contacting suppliers etc. It is a wide range of tasks involving managing a project. These projects include process improvements and even future business planning.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Communication skills was greatly developed. A wide range of people, both internally and externally, from different backgrounds. Delivering the message clearly is one of the challenges I have to address everyday. Time and task management is another skill that was heavily in use. As the work is project based, many tasks can happen in parallel at the same time. It is crucial to make sure progress is made for all tasks, so they can be delivered in a timely manner.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • There was a lot of trust and responsibility given to me. I was responsible in tasks that would actually make an impact in the production, and even the future business of the plant. They empowered me to improve different processes happening across the factory, improving efficiency and reducing risk. For future business, crucial achievements were made based on the work I have done. It was amazing how they trusted me with the responsibly I have in my internship.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There are review sessions every month with my supervisor. In these session, we will review on my recent work and the development of my skills. It is a great chance to align what I believe I have developed, with feedbacks from my colleagues. It makes sure the progress I am making is the same as how people view it, and identify areas to improve on next. Except for reviewing my development, my department fully supported me in involving with different opportunities. From work experiences in other departments to plant visits, it provided me with a better view of the whole business.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture and general atmosphere in the company is good. Everyone is working hard as a team to achieve our production targets while meeting quality requirements. Also, one of the cultures in the company is it really promotes creative thinking. We have a really strong innovation and digitalization department to provide support to creative ideas. Also, there is a fresh thinking award given to employees in this plant for great ideas that helped the plant to run more efficiently.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I am really happy to complete an internship here in Hams Hall plant BMW Group. I managed to gain experiences which I never will in university. Such as working with a wide range of people, communicating with internal and external parties, and managing projects that will impact the production or department. Also, as I am from a automotive engineering background, the role I am doing involves manufacturing engineering knowledges. It gave me a great chance to see how engineering principles are applied differently, and how different engineers work together to achieve a greater goal.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group UK
  • Show your enthusiasm! One of the main reasons I managed to get this role is my enthusiasm in cars, no matter as an automotive engineering student in my studies, or outside of it. BMW Group is one of the leaders in the car manufacturing industry, there will be a lot of chance where you will be working with the latest and best technologies available. If you could show your passion in this industry, it will really help in securing a role.
