Overview
We had a weekly rotation of daily tasks within the team so you wouldn't have the same task to do every day. One day you may be in charge of the Financial Accounts inbox having to resolve anything that comes into the inbox or passing it onto the relevant team. Another day you may have to approve payments making sure all the details matchup with the account and backup's provided as well as making sure it hasn't been a duplicate payment request. Alternatively, you may be required to complete AdHocs or imports which is a very similar process once again making sure everything all adds up to the backups that have been provided.
Skills
Yes, when starting here I had little knowledge of accounting as I had previously only done 2 modules on it during my time at university. However, since then I have learned so many new things with the monthly/quarterly/half year reporting that they have to do here. Not only this they have also given me the opportunity to develop my hard and soft skills. As a result, the development of these will help with me being able to improve on my future employability. Another thing I would say when coming into this position I also only had basic Microsoft office competency, however since working here I have learned so many new things especially with shortcuts to formulas like X & V lookups.
Responsibilities
Yes, obviously I had the standard daily tasks which already had a lot of responsibility where a lot of my signing off was at the final stages. As a result, you really had to make sure everything was correct as it was at the last point before payment would be authorised. Not only this you also have the monthly reporting processes where you must make sure you have completed all of your bulk uploads, bank and balance sheet reconciliations as well as a few other reports. These all have different deadlines during month end and all need to be done before the deadline before being checked and signed off by a Financial Accountant to approve.
Support & Guidance
I had a lot of support and guidance during my time here. The team here was really helpful and if you ever had any questions or wanted to go through something they were always really approachable. I had weekly one to one meetings with one of the Financial Accountants in the team to discuss anything I needed to and if at any point in the week something else came up I could talk to anyone in our team and they would always find time to help you out.
Culture
The company culture is amazing here and couldn't praise it anymore, there is a lot of flexibility within the company. For example, they offer the chance to do hybrid working where you can work from home up to 3 times a week. There is also a lot of trust as well with the flexibility where you can choose the working hours that work best for you where if you want to start early and finish early you can. This I believe helps make you feel more valued and respected within the workforce here. As a result, which has helped improve the employee engagement and morale in the company bettering the working environment due to the flexibility and trust that they offer to their employees.
Your Impressions
I have genuinely loved my placement here, I have learned so many new things to do with accounting and have also been able to develop new and old skills. But, from when I first started here you can just tell that the working environment and ethos was really good here and everyone gets a long really well. Like I said earlier the flexibility and trust they give here really makes you feel valued and It really has been a great opportunity to work here. I could easily see myself working here in the future once I have graduated from university.
Yes
I would recommend to make sure you update your cv and apply all of your previous experience and skills to the job description and job role. For example, I didn't have much accounting experience or knowledge however when on my education section in my CV I wrote about my 2 accounting and finance modules I had completed at university on my business management course and applied it to what they wanted to see demonstrated from the job description. This is because if you just send a generic CV to them you’re less likely to stand out when compared to other candidates that have tailored it to the exact job description and job role.
