    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Contract writing/analysis, negotiation, producing work for wider comercial team i.e commercial calendars, induction packs, managing and tracking costs and hours on locomotive works, issuing payments to agencies and third party workers. Participating in team activities and events and aid in organizing said events i.e commercial annual event.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, cost management, contract analysis/writing, leadership, negotiation and learnt the SAP system, practical experience and application of knowledge to the work place in the rail industry. broadened my perspective i.e seeing everything my role entails and how a giant in the industry operates.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement, this increased as it went on, i.e negotiating with a subcontractor the price of works on a locomotive, or creating SESs or creating POs for agency workers. Responsible for tracking costs and hours on the aforementioned locomotive.

  • I was given freedom to learn on my own and if i had any questions or concerns i was able to speak to my line manager/supervisor or member of the commercial team.

  • The placement was a great learning experience, I got to meet many new people interns and seniors alike. The environment was friendly and i was able to progress as a quantity surveyor
