Overview
The insight involved completing work that would be assigned to trainee solicitors. On a day-to-day basis, I was given a couple of tasks that would take me a couple of days to complete, varying from research tasks to analysing arguments that could be used in a case. The bigger tasks included preparing a PowerPoint for clients and drafting a note of advice for a client.
Skills
I have learnt lots of new skills at the placement. The biggest skill I learnt was practicing using my own initiative to complete next steps of tasks when not necessarily prompted to. I also improved my confidence, being encouraged to introduce myself to new people within the team and actively seek feedback from my supervisors. I learnt a lot of new technical skills too regarding Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
Business Insight
We were given really informative presentations about the plans of the firm as a business and how it plans to expand and keep up with societal change, from the CEO of the firm themselves. We were also informed of the potential graduate roles available and were encouraged at all times to work hard to achieve those roles.
Culture
Everyone in the firm was very friendly and willing to have a chat with me at all times! The general atmosphere was really welcoming, lots of people moving around and not staying confined to their offices in order to chat to their colleagues, which was really good to see.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the insight very much. Whilst the work was challenging, I felt supported during the whole insight.
Yes
When filling out the application form, try and be bold and make some of your answers stand out. The feedback I received on my application was that they liked that I talked about other things than just law and gave my own twist to some questions, as it is so much more refreshing for the person reading it. When coming to the assessment center, the interviewers are trying to get the best out of you, so ask when you're not sure and they will be more than happy to guide you towards finding the right answer.
