Overview
The scheme was great for getting to know the culture of the company, as well as the daily work involved in being a surveyor at Savills. There might be a meeting first thing, then I got on with whatever work my mentor (or anyone else on the team) wanted completing, which was usually comps or a presentation, and on some days a site visit might take up a few hours of the afternoon.
Skills
Excel! You're put to work straight away on real jobs, so having a decent knowledge of excel is really helpful, though I was taught so much on the job. Also, having the confidence to talk to new people - in the team, company, sales teams and more - and make myself known, was a skill that really developed over the summer scheme.
Business Insight
I didn't realise just how many departments and sectors Savills had! We were given 'Departmental Overviews' on Zoom calls with relevant associates and directors, which was great to get an insight into the places we otherwise wouldn't see in our daily work. Everyone in the business was happy to discuss their career progression, and give advice on how to get back into the company as a graduate.
Culture
The company atmosphere was much more welcoming than I had predicted. Everyone was keen to talk and get to know me, and there were many socials where people at all levels attended, for drinks in the afternoon or after work. I think the company expects hard workers during the day, but is happy to balance that out with socialising after the work is done.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the summer scheme; it was a great balance of learning how the team, and company, operates, whilst having a good time and meeting new people. The biggest benefit was getting familiar with Savills before applying for the Graduate Programme, so I can now make an informed choice on which pathway I'd like to be on. Yes, it's a corporate office, but the people here aren't corporate themselves, they're really nice!
Yes
From the advice I've been given, Savills seems to really value integrity and diversity, so they want people who are authentically themselves in the application process and interview/assessment centre. Having some decent commercial awareness is also crucial to get the internship, as well as being positive and open to new opportunities - be willing to put yourself out there.
