    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I apply statistics and data science knowledge on a day to day basis. Main project involves building a tool from scratch that automates analysis and makes the entire project delivery process way quicker, this includes coding in python and requires me to have extensive relevant statistics skills which are very standard to the industry. On top of that I do a bunch of smaller projects as well as activities like presenting posters and presentations.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Plenty skills were developed from hard skills like statistics, software development, data wrangling and handling using different programming languages like python, R and SAS. But also soft skills like communication through plenty meetings, presentation skills like having the opportunity to present in front of very senior people in the company including the director, and plenty other skills.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes I was given a lot of responsibility on my own accord. I had a whole project which I have lead with some business crucial aspects but also on top of that I had plenty of studies that I was involved in where I was trusted to obtain the correct results. With that said any time I would get stuck the support would be there and I never felt too overwhelmed with the workload.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A lot, I had my LM who was always there to help with any issues, but then my team was also there to support me with any technical problems. I was also given a buddy to help me settle into the company and team. Placement team was there in case I had any problems which I didn't want to deal with my LM. I also received my mentor who helped me reach my Learning objectives.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Really fun, everyone is very kind and supporting always willing to put aside some of their work to help even us interns. Being a large company there is always something going on from poster presentations where people show of their projects and science to team building events. The whole time I have never been treated as just the intern and I experienced no negative behaviour.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time here as I have managed to work on very interesting and business important projects. All of the projects have been very varied and I had full control over what I was involved on. On top of that I wanted to work on things that had no relevance to my team or my background such as lab work and I was always allowed and welcomed. On the social side all of the employees have been super nice and supportive as well as the interns that I have befriended.

  • 7. Would you recommend BAT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to BAT
  • Don't be put off by the fact it is a tobacco company. BAT is a good company to work for, they treat their employees really well. Even if you come in without all the knowledge in your area you will never find that to be the problem here as you can always catch up and the workload you are given will be right for you.
