Overview
On a day-to-day basis I would be working on a project set from my Line Manager. I'd be helping out with anything ranging from calculations, report writing and modeling.
Skills
I have developed many skills with my time at Arcadis. It has been really eye opening to see what it is really like working for a civil engineering company, it is something that you do not get taught at University. The amount of collaboration and reviewing that goes into a single project is impressive. Communication is the most important thing.
Responsibilities
Yes, my Line Manager was great at keeping me busy. Straight from the start i was given a lot of responsibility which was a bit scary but I'm glad looking back, I ended up feeling very included and that my work was actually going towards something.
Support & Guidance
I received plenty of guidance from the company and even my University. I was allocated a 'Buddy' who was someone i could talk to if my line manager was away or if i needed help with any assignments i was set. The university kept in touch with me during my placement with regular check in meetings to track my progress and address any concerns I may have had.
Culture
The atmosphere is good, I was able to work in the office and remotely as I saw fit but I really enjoyed the days I did go into the office as everyone is helpful and is always kind and up for a chat
Your Impressions
I enjoyed my placement, I was worried working for such a big company but I was still given tones of work and could see my work was actively used throughout the project. The office is lovely and so are the people.
Yes
Its important to get the most out of you placement, don't be afraid to ask questions and speak out. Let other know if there is anything specific you'd like to be involved with and most of the time you'll be able to try it out.
