    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Working alongside investment managers, gaining insights into their daily work as well as attending teaching sessions from individuals from different areas of the business to learn about various roles and learn basic finance fundamentals. I gained support and discussed work-related topics with both an internal and external mentor. This also involved completing an individual project which included a client pitch, stock research and portfolio construction.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to value a company and how to go about researching investments as well as building my financial awareness and general knowledge. I have also been able to work on my interpersonal skills by developing relationships in a work environment and work on my presentation skills by undertaking a project resulting in a final presentation.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I think the level of responsibility could be improved - for example scheduling into the timetable some tasks that feel as though you are contributing towards the business. Although I found the final project highly valuable, the hypothetical scenario meant that it didn't feel as real and that I could have been exposed to more responsibility.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The mentor that we were paired up with on the desk meant that I felt that I always had support and guidance if needed. I also felt that I had the support of the other members of the team and also from my external mentor. I think the structured timetable was really useful to be able to get guidance on daily tasks but have enough time to maintain flexibility and take control.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everybody I interacted with was incredibly friendly and particularly helpful, particularly those who led teaching sessions with the group of interns always offering help and support beyond those timetabled sessions. There seems to be a strong balance of hard work with a good work-life balance.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found it highly valuable. I think I particularly liked that I had a structured timetable as it meant that I felt less overwhelmed and was able to gain valuable insights into the business and learn finance fundamentals in a friendly setting. I really enjoyed the project as it allowed me to research and find areas that I was specifically interested in and tailor that to the brief.
