Overview
My role at Arup is to assist with the design of mechanical services for a variety of different projects. This could be by providing layouts for ventilation ducts or heating and cooling pipes, or performing calculations to size these ducts/pipes. Another part of my job is to perform energy calculations using IES.
Skills
I have learnt many new skills in different software's such as IES, Excel, Revit and Bluebeam. I have developed my team-working, time management, and presenting skills throughout the year through projects and both internal and external meetings. I have also learnt what it means to be to be an engineer within this industry and learnt skills that would help me in the future
Responsibilities
I was given quite a lot of responsibility as my placement progressed which helped me develop my skills and put those that I have learnt into projects. Towards the end of my placement I was trusted to complete tasks on my own, with the knowledge that I could ask for help whenever I needed it.
Support & Guidance
I received a great deal of support during my placement, I had a buddy at the beginning who helped me in my first few weeks to meet the team and made me feel welcome. I had a lot of assistance when working on projects from the mechanical leader and other members of my team. I knew I could ask for help when I needed it
Culture
The general atmosphere at Arup was good, everyone was very friendly and made me feel welcome as part of the team right from the start. We had a variety of culture sessions for people to express their opinions on what could be improved within the team which was a great benefit.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my placement, I have made a lot of good friends throughout the year and learned a great deal that will help me in my last year at university and my future career in Engineering.
