Overview
Daily tasks include updating engineers trackers and a progress PowerPoint. Joining the engineers on site to set out earthwork extents, vegetation clearance and drainage using a GPS or Trimble. Overseeing the sub-contractors works including topsoil strips, excavations, sheet piling mat formation etc, and taking progress pictures as well as any measurements to ensure sub-contractors were on track. Office works included carbon case studies, to calculate the carbon saved on the current project.
Skills
Definitely, my confidence has grown since being here, whether that is my technical knowledge or communication skills in a meeting etc. I have also learnt practical engineering skills for example, setting out with a GPS or Trimble on site and navigating around CAD (something that I have not yet been taught at University). I have also learnt organisational skills, for example when keeping on top of trackers daily to ensure that the gangs are on track.
Responsibilities
Yes, towards the end of the placement I was able to set out the extents unassisted using GPS and pegs. In the office I was given the responsibility for a certain drainage tracker to test for asbestos in concrete and clay pipes. As well as this, I have created various carbon case studies unassisted to show the positive outcomes of new technologies employed on the NEAR scheme.
Support & Guidance
Plenty! [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyPlacement Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] my line manager was always quick to reply and help with any issues I was having regarding my IT etc. The other engineers around have also very helpful to any queries or questions I have had surround the work itself, as well as any questions I have had around their own personal engineering journey.
Culture
Very good!! I was worried to begin with being a young woman, in a construction environment. But had nothing to worry about! Everyone very welcoming!
Your Impressions
Really enjoyed it! I feel as though I have gained a lot more then what I expected when applying for it. Including growing my confidence and interest in the construction field. I have found it very different from Uni, however, insightful and interesting.
Yes
To ask questions when you're unsure about something. I though it was quite a good interview process where its just 1-1, therefore you can get personality across without it being daunting.
