Overview
My daily tasks are very varied - I could be doing property management tasks such as organising a boiler replacement, organising property inspections to ensure we are compliant. An exciting project I managed included installing a new broadband system across a major estate that we manage. I've also been involved in various tree management projects - projects are exciting as you can see them through from start to finish.
Skills
A new skill I've learnt is people management, I have to liaise with contractors and tenants daily, and organise a range of people to complete a project. Additionally, my communication skills have definitely improved, at first I was nervous about making calls about tasks I was unsure about but have learnt that at the end of the day everyone is willing to help. For example, I was worried about speaking with a contractor regarding external remedials required at a property, I ended up asking to visit the property with the contractor to talk me through everything - this is the best way to learn the construction side of real estate, especially as a non-cognate student.
Responsibilities
I was actually surprised with the amount of responsibility I was given - I have felt like I have been treated the same as the graduate employees which has been great and colleagues are always understanding if you do have a lot on and don't hesitate to offer help.
Support & Guidance
I have had a great supervisor who has supported me from day 1 of my placement. I came in with very little prior industry experience and have never felt too out of my depth which is due to the great training I have had.
Culture
The culture in my office has been great - in the office, everyone is very friendly and happy to help if you have a question. is also great out of the office where we occasionally go for drinks after work or play some type of sport.
Your Impressions
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and think it has definitely helped shape my future career.
Yes
Just be yourself and don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd. The assessment centre is a great opportunity to show who you really are as a person.
