Overview
Daily Tasks: - Admin (emails and arranging meetings) - Assigned work tasks (computer based and dependent on which team you're on) - Regular Coffee breaks - Presentations and Introductions - Networking - Attending Corporate event fairs Interactions: - These are very dependent on how much effort you make and also how often your desk works from home. Most days I have one person on either side of me to talk to and ask for help. I will often also have check ins with whoever is the lead for the task you're doing. Many interactions are quick skype calls. - There are lots of opportunities to get to know the people working around you from other teams but you have to be comfortable reaching out to them and asking if they have time to discuss their role etc. (this is very much worth doing as much as possible) Projects: - Projects are desk dependent but usually revolve around modelling, programming, research and speaking to stakeholders (internal or external)
Skills
- Modelling languages (SysML and Matlab, both of which I had no experience in before) - Presentation and communication skill are very important and will be developed quickly if there are any areas you are lacking - Research skills (online or through asking people) - How to operate in a business environment - lots of background knowledge and history of missiles which you may not appreciate going in but is really important to properly understand the products
Responsibilities
Most of the responsibility will revolve around running meetings and making contributions. For certain tasks you may have personal management responsibilities (keeping yourself on track)
Support & Guidance
A lot if you are happy to ask people, fairly little if not
Culture
Very Relaxed compared to my initial assumptions. Dress code really is whatever you're comfortable in and hours/leave are very flexible
Your Impressions
Very enjoyable and rewarding if you keep an open mind and keep yourself busy. The times I found myself bored came when I didn't have enough work so don't be afraid to ask for more things to do
Yes
Be outgoing and take all the opportunities you can get. Ask lots of questions
