Overview
I am in the R&D department so work pretty independently on my own project/work package which is software/coding based. I also check in with my manager daily to report back on progress and see where I could be improving/ if I've gone down the wrong route. I also attend weekly meetings with the rest of the team where progress reports are shared.
Skills
I've improved my coding skills as well as picking parts of new languages that are required during my software development.
Responsibilities
Yes, I was assigned my own work package at the beginning of the internship and whilst support was available throughout I was solely responsible for the outcome and the direction of the work.
Support & Guidance
I was given a brief overview of the objectives I was meant to achieve, and then worked pretty independently for the rest of the internship which I enjoyed quite a lot. Support was available throughout if I needed it or got stuck but while I was getting on and making progress I was left to my own devices which helped me to improve my problem solving skills
Culture
The general atmosphere in the office was very friendly, and people also were working quite hard during hours.
Your Impressions
I've had a lot of fun and found my internship very interesting, engaging and rewarding. At times I ran up against problems but was able to either solve my way through them or ask for help, so I feel I have made a progress and actually achieved something during my time with the company.
Yes
Don't worry about not knowing stuff before you arrive - you will learn all the skills you need to know on the job, just have an eager attitude towards learning and applying yourself to problems given to you
