Overview
I was able to immerse myself within the firm's Energy, Marine and Natural Resources (B) seat completing various legal research, case management and shadowing tasks. Working responsibilities aside, the Early Careers team facilitated a number of enriching workshops and social networking opportunities where I was able to interact with fellow vac schemers, fee earners and those within business services, ultimately allowing me to gain insight into the firm culture.
Skills
- built technical skills, working with a range of the firm's case management software - developed networking and social skills amongst peers as well as in vertical interactions (talking to partners, legal directors etc.) - Improvement in working under timed conditions - Received and implemented feedback concerning personal skills such as confidence and resilience - Strengthened communication, both in verbal and written contexts - Greatly developed commercial acumen as well as understanding of legal systems and procedures
Business Insight
The opportunity to understand business and potential roles available was largely insightful as a vacation scheme student. This allowed me to view the firm's opportunities outside of it's legal stream and gain understanding into the system- like nature of the firm's activities. Panels held by those within Diversity, Inclusion and Equity and conversations with people in financial services were informative and showed the firm's dedication to having an inclusive workforce.
Culture
The company culture was incredibly welcoming to young talent, with those at partner level often willing to engage in conversation and impart knowledge on newcomers despite their busy workloads! The significant focus on employee resource networks such as aced, gecco and pryde & co, demonstrated the firm's dedication to embracing and celebrating difference, values which I highly resonate with and seek in a place of employment. Vac schemers also had the chance to attend the firm's annual Summer Party which was a very delightful experience that encapsulated Clyde & Co's amazing culture dedicated to celebrating all who make the firm what it is!
Your Impressions
The vacation scheme was extremely enjoyable and enriching as it provided me with a great deal of personal development as well as the opportunity to build meaningful working relationships at the firm. My supervisors and trainee buddies cultivated an environment where I was able to comfortably ask questions about case- related matters, the legal industry and personal insights which was extremely enjoyable for me as I felt I was able to be myself and grow.
