Overview
Depends on what you do, but could be helping design a part of a RR engine, working in manufacturing and helping fix problems or working on some code for a software tool or engine.
Skills
Tonnes. University prepares you for the technical aspects, but the placement makes you learn how to actually apply it, what's actually important and helps you gain loads of "soft" skills.
Responsibilities
Loads of responsibility. Proved software required a delayed release. Took RR customers around site. Recommended several thousand pound investments in software pilots. Helped speed up development of an engine part. Helped manage changes within a program and recommend next steps. Controlled and helped update a critical program management plan for a 100+ million pound program. Your responsibilities increased as you proved capability.
Support & Guidance
As much as needed. Managers were friendly, kind and helpful. If needed they micromanage when I was uncertain or didn't know enough. But they provided information on what I need to do next and how it fits in with the bigger plan. Leading me to become more and more independent. As I became more independent I was given more space and freedom. All of the time though they recommended I explore additional training outside of what my job was just to learn more about RR.
Culture
Absolutely fantastic. I was treated as a real employee and when I finally did leave I was given a leaving meal, card, gift card and many people came and have personal conversations with me saying thank you etc. it's an incredibly friendly place.
Your Impressions
I loved my placement so much I was dreading the last day. I have had genuinely the best year of my life so far, and so now going back to university whilst I know I'll enjoy it, I wish I was still at RR.
Yes
Apply apply apply. Make the most of it, be in the office every day, ask as many questions as possible and grab every opportunity possible. You won't regret it. Make sure you complete your tasks and work hard too and the teams you work in will really love you.
