Overview
I spent time researching materials sourcing, sustainability and suitability for different real projects Arup is currently working on. This involved reading websites and publications, and carrying out some data analysis and report writing. I worked closely with senior engineers in the team who supported me with any questions I had.
Skills
I have considerably improved by skills at Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel and Word, as well as my ability to write reports concisely. I also developed my critical analysis skills and presentation of data in a clear way.
Responsibilities
Significant responsibility - within two days I was already working on a real client project and left independently to carry out my research and data analysis. The chance to work on a real client project was very rewarding.
Support & Guidance
Lots of support - the senior engineers in the team were always available to ask questions to whenever I was unsure.
Culture
The company culture was really nice - as Arup is a partnership, everyone feels valued and respects each other. There was no pressure to work better than others and my contributions felt very valued. There were also many benefits which added to the culture, such as cake on Thursdays.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the variety of work I was offered and the chance to work on real projects so early on in my internship. The team was very friendly and supportive and I felt very valued.
Yes
Ensure you are really interested in your chosen field, as well as how it relates to sustainability and the circular economy. Try to relate your application to specific projects and work that Arup does.
