    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • There are two parts to my job: Advisory and Compliance. Advisory involves providing tax advice to our clients on a range of taxes, i.e., Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax. This advice may come in the form of reports, memos, emails. When starting an advisory project, I will carry out the initial technical research and draft the first copy. Compliance refers to the 'tax return cycle'. This involves organising the for the collation of client information, inputting this into the tax return software and drafting the report that is provided alongside the return.

  • This placement has been a great insight into the working world and has been invaluable to my professional development. It has allowed me to build upon my written, verbal, and numerical skills, but to also start to establish interpersonal skills to use with clients.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Typically within PCS, you are not allocated a client base until you reach Consultant grade. However, I assigned my own client, as an Analyst, to oversee. I was responsible for the take-on processes, liaising with him, completing his tax return, arranging for the review and submission of his return, and handling other general inquiries.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Throughout my placement, I had access to a buddy, for 'silly' questions, a coach, for questions relating to professional development, and a people leader, if I ever had any other non-work related questions. Then, at all times, my team were there to support me on technical pieces of work, where needed. They were all extremely willing to help out, no matter how many or what questions I would ask!

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The Company culture is fantastic. Being in a regional office, it feels as if the team is much better connected than the London office. There are many socials (ones with and without drinking) throughout the year for everyone to get involved in.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte
  • Express your interest in the service line and office location that you are applying for. It might sound obvious, but the interviewers want to hire candidates that want to work for the job that they are applying for! If you are applying for a role as a way into Deloitte, then there is no point. You need to show the interviewers that you have a genuine interest in that role and office location,
