Overview
Assigned two projects to complete. One is to renovate an existing Python application with a few PowerShell Scripts and attaching a website (front-end) to it. Also had to add on it with more requirements from my team members. Working on the project needed me to talk with members of other teams depending what I was stuck on at the time.
Skills
I've definitely improved my skills in React, it took a bit of time but I understand how to use the library enough to get my way around it. Also, this internship experience gave me exposure to libraries I didn't really use in Python much, which were useful to what I was working.
Responsibilities
From the get-go I was given free-reign to work on my project and deliver it to a standard that I believed was good. Though I had to gather requirements from my team members and build them out, the way I implemented them was all up to me, there were some times were I had to follow things the company's way, almost all of the time, it was reasonable and worked out better.
Support & Guidance
All of my team members were available to talk to me whenever I needed them, if they weren't in the office, I could just message them and they'd respond pretty fast. We always had daily catch ups so if there were concerns, I always had the chance to bring it up during that call and have my concerns solved.
Culture
The company culture and general atmosphere is pretty unique and reasonable. Everybody is friendly so it's pretty easy to go up to someone's desk and ask for a quick question or have a conversation so long as they're not in a meeting or busy. The company definitely has the right balance and the fact that they do it well explains why many people return back.
Your Impressions
It didn't feel like a chore to come to the office and work what I needed to do. I was surprised at how much responsibility and flexibility I was given which was a positive from my side. The way the internship scheme worked means you spend most of your time actually working and providing value to your team, there are sessions that you need to attend, but they were all useful and were reasonable in frequency.
Yes
Read around what Nomura does first, talk to others working in Nomura, hear their experience and figure out why you want to apply for Nomura specifically. Even telling how you found Nomura and showing the research you've done before would show that you're eager to learn. If you can back that up with programming projects that can show you have the technical skills would be good too.
