Overview
The role involved automating processes using Excel and VBA, analysing historical market data in Excel and Python, using Python to optimise portfolios among other tasks. On a day to day this was writing code, running scenarios, meeting people from different teams in the division and learning about pricing and financial markets in general.
Skills
Yes definitely. I came into the internship with limited experience in Python and Excel, no experience with VBA and basic knowledge of financial markets. I have developed my coding skills through practical tasks which were great for learning in context. There was a training week where we were introduced to financial markets and Excel which was a great starting point and then I learnt through courses provided by the company.
Responsibilities
Yes I think I definitely was given responsibility from day one (or from when I had my laptop all set up). I felt tasks I was doing were very good for my learning but also were useful to my team. Once you gain credibility through your work you are given more responsibility.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance throughout the time on my internship. My manager was supportive and helpful but there also a buddy system and also a mentor for more career progression related questions. The HR department was also very supportive and we had a series of speaker events giving advice and guidance on career related topics.
Culture
The company culture was very friendly and open to helping juniors. People from wider teams were very willing to meet and have a chat about what they do and give me advice. My team always gave constructive feedback on my work and were willing to help with my progression and learning.
Your Impressions
I very much enjoyed my time on my summer internship and I would definitely recommend the company and division. I had opportunity to develop my skillset and learn a lot about the industry in the short time I have been here, whilst also bringing value to my team and delivering useful work.
Yes
I would advise to apply early and to research the firm thoroughly. Research the firms values and the work they do to decide if it would be a good fit for you. I would also recommend to have a good idea of what the division you are applying to does and what skills would be valuable.
