Overview
I rotate around a number of teams through out the year, each of which are working on the audit of a particular client. On a day to day basis, I have a catch-up call with the internal team and they set my priorities for the day. I support the team by carrying out testings on particular parts of the Financial Statements, attending client calls and filling out audit documentation.
Skills
Yes I have experienced so much growth on my placement, mainly how to communicate in the corporate world, networking, excel skills and problem solving.
Responsibilities
Yes, I wasn't treated like an intern but like a permanent member of the team from day 1. I did feel as though I was thrown into the deep end in many situations, but this helped me learn a lot fast.
Support & Guidance
I had various levels of support, which was very helpful. However, I did still feel as though I could get lost in who to go to for support because of the vast size of the company and various teams I worked on.
Culture
The culture has an awful work life balance. People don't leave the office at 5, generally 6 but then there are always lots working later. Then for juniors, they have to spend their evenings studying too so there is a general atmosphere of struggling.
Your Impressions
I overall had a positive experience and enjoyed myself at various points. However, this was offset by some negative experiences with management and being overworked.
Yes
The first couple years are tough because you are constantly studying, sitting exams and carrying out the boring, repetitive audit tasks. You need to assess whether it is worth it.
