Overview
Investment Banking revolves around the acquisition of potential targets including finding suitable targets, valuation of these targets and analyzing if the market is favorable right now to go through with the acquisition. As an intern in M&A within the Investment Banking Division interns focus on creating material for potential clients, previous clients or current clients. This involves analyzing the targets and acquirers market, creating company profiles of potential targets and helping your team wherever you can.
Skills
In learned a lot during my internship. My main learnings include considerations that are important when valuing a company and how certain assumptions might change the valuation, how to use PowerPoint and excel for efficiently by learning new shortcuts and how to use different platforms to get information about the market.
Responsibilities
While working on real projects, I have been given responsibility to an appropriate degree. This means that I created material for real clients, but it was checked again by several people before it was finally sent out externally. While working on my final intern project, I was fully responsible for valuing the company properly and judging whether or not it is a suitable target for the acquirer right now.
Support & Guidance
I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my internship. In the first week, all interns had 1 week of technical training. During the internship all interns were assigned two Buddies who helped whenever something was unclear. Furthermore, all interns had mentors from a different team that one could reach out to in case needed. During daily task I felt encouraged to ask questions which were answered not only by my buddies but by the entire team.
Culture
The intern group was super friendly. Interns supported and helped each other, which also reflects the culture in the company. The team is helpful and willing to explain more if something is unclear or if you don't understand how to do it they will show you. Every now and then on Thursdays we went out together after work. In the office you don't talk much unless you have a question because everyone is very focused
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed my internship. I learned very much about the industry, tasks and tools. My main learnings include powerpoint shortcuts, how to use platforms such as Bloomberg, Euromonitor, Refinitiv, and Mergermarket as well as the sensitivity of valuations based on different assumptions. Furthermore I really liked my peer group this year so that we spend a lot of time outside the office as well.
Yes
For technicals: when preparing for interviews try to really understand why certain assumptions are driven by x,y,z and try to understand how this would change if a new variable is added to it In general: Be yourself. Nomura puts a high emphasis on hiring people that are not just has a great technical knowledge but also on people actually being nice and not competitive towards each other. Try to show that you are a team player and easy to get a long with
