    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As Marketing IP Student for DePuy Synthes, I led and supported product demonstrations for internal and external audiences including surgeons and nurses. To facilitate these workshops, I was also responsible for inventory management; raising purchase orders and communicating with suppliers. Other responsibilities involved: creating marketing materials and processing them through the internal copy review process, developing the content for the launch of DePuy Synthes’ “Cement” webpage, supporting a new product launch, sales analysis and supporting other business functions such as CSR and STEM.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Throughout my placement, I have developed many of my existing skills including presenting, communication, teamwork, time management and creativity. I have also developed new skills such as project management, events planning and hosting and inventory management. It has been a great experience gaining these new skills as I was able take accountability for areas which were previously unfamiliar to me; in turn, this has helped to develop my confidence overall.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • From the start of my placement it was clear that the role of placement student was an important one and the work completed by the placement student was an important contribution to the team. This was a great motivator because it meant that I was delegated responsibility for tasks and projects that I knew were important and supported the base business. I was responsible for leading a few major projects throughout the year, where my team was available to support me, but it was a great experience leading the project myself and seeing them through to the end.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I was really lucky on my placement year because my internal team was very supportive and everyone was always happy to help and support me in any way that they could. Additionally, the wider team, extending globally, was really supportive and the culture of the company overall was really great. Everyone on site at Blackpool was very supportive and friendly.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I can’t recommend enough to anyone how positive and great the culture working for Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is. I worked specifically for DePuy Synthes, within J&J, but the company values from J&J were present in everything that we did. J&J is a really supportive and caring company from my experience; they really value their employees and they also play an active role in supporting the community.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year at DePuy Synthes (J&J) because even though the Med Tech industry was not an area that I was initially interested in, I was grateful to upskill myself in the area and learn about orthopaedic bone cement. It was great to work for a company that physically made a difference to the world and for the better; this is in line with their credo and putting patients first. This really aligned with my own values and I feel this is why I gained so much out of my placement year. This placement provided me with new experiences and opportunities that would not have been available to me if I didn’t choose to do it. I would recommend applying for a placement with J&J, specifically DePuy Synthes in Blackpool.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Johnson & Johnson
  • When applying to J&J, make sure to do your research on the company and look into their Credo because it is the root of the company and will most likely come up in the interview stage. For your own benefit, make sure to research into the job role to see if you are a match for it and if you will enjoy the tasks that are listed. Also, prepare for the interview, so that you can present the best version of yourself; your skill set.
