    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role was within the Financial Due Diligence team. This is a stage in the Mergers and Acquisition deal process which assesses the strengths and weaknesses of a business, and identifies areas that may impact the headline price of a business. On a day-to-day basis, as an analyst, this involves a lot of excel analysis to produce a databook to give a deep understanding of a companies finances. In addition, you will help produce PowerPoints by drafting slides for question and answer sessions with management and for a final report. You will also attend meetings with the companies management and take notes.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • - Developed a deep understanding of financial due diligence and where it sits in the wider deal process. - Data analytic skills: Microsoft Excel skills developed and opportunity to complete the Alteryx Core Certification. - Involved in projects from a wide range of sectors helping develop knowledge of how different businesses operate and opportunities/risks they face. - Soft skills developed: time management, teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • For the most part I was given opportunities from the beginning to contribute meaningful work to projects such as excel analysis in areas that the client deemed as a key risk. There were some quiet periods due to the lack of deals happening in the wider market but when there was work I was on projects and given opportunity to challenge myself on new analysis.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Plenty. You were assigned a line manager for the year, as well as a buddy (someone close to your level). Everyone was approachable and happy to help with any issues that you had.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I would say that it was very positive at the beginning pushing the message that RSM wants to be the leading advisor to the middle-market. As the company faced a slow down, atmosphere felt like it was turning a bit down beat. Overall, everyone I spoke to was approachable and happy to help with anything so would give culture and atmosphere a 4/5.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Believe it was a worthwhile experience gaining first hand experience working in Corporate Finance and Accounting helping me develop skills that will be helpful in my future career. Believe I could have made a bit more progress which was halted by the lack of work at times but feel that was more of an industry thing, rather than the firm not giving me work.
