Overview
My day-to-day role working in the SOC involves working with the team to monitor and handle security incidents that appear through the alerting software. We discuss an appropriate course of action for each alert and alert tuning adjustments that would be beneficial for the team. We also work with the other security teams to understand the threat landscape and how these insights can be incorporated. I also spend time working towards personal objectives, gaining qualifications, working with other interns on our project and networking with other colleagues to understand their role and their team.
Skills
I have learnt a huge amount in the time I have been with M&G. I have been able to apply many of the concepts learnt through school and university to the real-world environment such as problem solving, teamwork, communication and programming and developed further skill and understanding. I have also gained a solid understanding of incident management, the tools we use and how the teams work within security to handle incidents as well as a series of qualifications within cyber security and through networking and projects within the teams, I have had the opportunity to develop my personal skills.
Responsibilities
I had the opportunity to undertake a series of independent tasks, one of which was being given the responsibility to create and present a tabletop exercise for the team. Through the intern project we were able to take responsibility for our own project and presentation and I had countless opportunities to be responsible for my own learning and development through networking opportunities and qualifications.
Support & Guidance
The support and guidance I received through each and every colleague was outstanding! I was made to feel very welcome and every colleague was happy to help or answer any questions I had. the early careers team were fantastic in being supportive throughout the application process and the internship itself and were always a point of contact for any guidance I needed. My manager was a particularly vital point of support and guidance. He always had time to explain things and help me understand the role of the team. He was very supportive of the qualifications I pursued and guided me towards the most relevant ones, he supported me with the completion of all of my objectives and gave me endless opportunities for learning and growth.
Culture
The culture at M&G is fantastic. Everyone is friendly, supportive and has a fantastic attitude to continuous learning! The workplace is a positive atmosphere, where everyone celebrates the successes of one another and holds themselves accountable. Every colleague is driven and hardworking and always has time to offer guidance and support. There is a strong focus on having work life balance and employee welbeing is a real priority- shown through the support available, onsite facilities and many more!

Each day I have felt supported and encouraged, and the opportunities I have had to learn and expand my network have been endless. The people I have worked with have been inspiring- it has been fantastic to be immersed in such a driven and learning orientated environment.
