Overview
I spent 10 weeks experiencing the infrastructure department, on a day to day basis this job involved me liaising with our clients eg: National Grid, Severn Trent, Cadent Gas, and their contractors via email/phone about projects, contacting landowners to arrange access into their land, assisted colleagues with any jobs/projects they needed help with, attended landowner meetings with colleagues to experience, take notes and records of conditions. I had the opportunity to do a day of door knocking visiting landowners properties to get contact details.
Skills
I have developed my communication skills, when I first started my placement I dreaded my first phone call with a landowner. Throughout my time at Fisher German I was given the responsibility of 3 National Grid Pylon lines which required me to phone landowners and get access to their land this meant I had to phone plenty of people and it has become easier, I have more confidence with it, and have developed my communication skills.
Responsibilities
I was given the responsibility for gaining access to land and sorting plans for 3 National Grid Pylon lines that had upcoming works, all three lines had specific dates that access was required from. A placement colleague and I were given responsibility to go door knocking for the GUC project in attempt of gaining contact details for landowners. I was certainly given responsibility for some small projects which was a good start, but there was always help around if I needed it.
Support & Guidance
Plenty, everyone in the office was super helpful and were always there to answer any questions I had. My line manager was great, she was always their to help me, answer my questions and help me to solve any problems that occurred
Culture
Was a really nice atmosphere, the infrastructure team get on with each other well, during my time I was lucky to attend some team social events outside of the office which was a nice opportunity to get to know everyone outside of work. Everyone in the office were super friendly and kind, its a great company who cares for their employees and provides a healthy working environment.
Your Impressions
I have really enjoyed my summer placement, the experience has been incredibly helpful, I did not know what infrastructure was before my placement, and now having had the opportunity to experience its opened my eyes to a new career path that is potentially for me.
Yes
Apply with an open mind, I was allocated a summer placement in the infrastructure department that I knew nothing about and didn't know if it would be for me however I am leaving Fisher German having enjoyed my experience within the infrastructure department and now thinking that it could be for me.
