    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Supporting four clinical trials across two therapeutic areas. Contributing to recruitment tracking, data management, trial master file maintenance and sample management. Beyond my involvement in clinical trials I participated in the Bridge to Employment program, mentoring students and helping them enhance their employability skills. Additionally, I project-managed the Dragons Den Project, which aimed to inspire students' interest in STEM and pharmaceuticals.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Through these activities, I honed a diverse range of skills in clinical trial operations like trial master file utilisation, data entry monitoring, and patient sample management. Additionally, I developed advanced Excel and project management skills. I also developed existing skills from university such as time management and organisation through managing various projects/ tasks with conflicting deadlines.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes! For example, during my placement, I was given significant responsibilities that directly impacted the smooth operation of a clinical trial. For instance, I was tasked with monitoring and tracking patient samples, identifying discrepancies or missing samples, and promptly notifying the team so they could address issues with the hospital sites. This role was crucial in ensuring that all patient samples were collected promptly, which directly contributed to the trial's overall success.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a ton of support during my placement from my line manager, the previous placement student during the handover, and my trial teams. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and understanding of my role as a placement student. They made sure I knew what was going on and felt comfortable with my tasks, going out of their way to help me whenever I needed it.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was fantastic. I felt very welcome from day one, and as a placement student, I never felt looked down on. Everyone treated me as an equal in all situations, which made the atmosphere really supportive and inclusive. It was clear that respect and collaboration were at the core of the company’s values.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement. I'd give it a 10/10. The welcoming company culture, the support from my team, and the meaningful responsibilities I was given made the experience both rewarding and enjoyable. Being treated as an equal and knowing that my work directly contributed to the success of a clinical trial made the whole experience even more fulfilling. It was a great environment to learn and grow in and I'd love to come back !
