    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Assisting construction managers with tasks relating to the overall build of the project. This includes going out on site and assisting with the daily site diary, documenting the progress of the build. Reinforcement checks using drawings was key in making sure what was being constructed matched what was being planned. Daily walk arounds for a general safety overview and querying anything on the safety software is essential. Inspections and audits are done regularly as well to ensure everything is going as it should. Any findings relating the progress of the project would be addressed in the following meetings for further action.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Developed my organizational skills with balancing tasks on site and in meetings. Communication and documentation skills were improved when relaying information, alongside teamwork when addressing issues with others. Attention to detail was incredibly augmented when comparing drawings and highlighting anything to be discussed. Technical skills when it came to using excel and writing meeting minutes were also developed and allowed me to be more concise and succinct with my work. Overall building confidence in my own work was developed throughout the internship as a whole.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • As much as I needed. If I needed help with anything, my line manager would be there to answer, always reassuring there was nothing like a 'stupid question'. Members of the SLT and other colleagues would be there to if I queried anything, or if I wanted to learn more about a particular area that I was interested in.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship as it was my first time working on quite a large project like this. I had the opportunity to develop a wider range of technical and soft skills, outside of university. My confidence has grown in being able to manage tasks and add value to others through the work I was doing. The responsibilities that I was given meant that I would gain the full experience working as an employee for a company which seeks to reach further with its ambitions.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Mace
  • Even if you may not have as much experience within the built environment, put yourself in situations where you can develop skills which include a level of responsibility and teamwork. I have found that these skills in particular can be applied within any context - you just have to be willing to comprehend the technicalities of the built environment to maximize your contribution. Practise discussing issues relating to the industry with others, giving balanced arguments. This could possibly reflect on the assessment centre stage of the application process, and within the role you may work in itself.
