Mechanical Engineering Placement Review

Working along side line engineers on several tasks including organisation and installation of pressure sensors, checking safety standards ensuing guarding and warning hazard lights are working correctly. I have been in longer term projects such as looking at the inclusion of RFID tracking to be able to monitor live conditions of rolls, and using this as a preventative measure to avoid defects.

Yes I have learnt valuable work place skills which have allowed me to have good work place relationships and progress my knowledge and mechanical understanding. One skill I have developed is my organisation and planning which is something I will find valuable going back to university and through into my career going forward.

Yes I was given lots of responsibilities throughout my year, I was given the freedom to complete tasks without being check on. I was given several projects which were directly related to the safety of the workers on the line as well as visitors and contractors.

I was given lots of support and guidance during my placement by everyone in my office, on the line and within the general engineering department. Everyone was very friendly and supportive if you asked for help. It was a good balance between guidance and freedom to get on with my jobs.

The company culture and atmosphere was generally good and supportive, this year has been tough for the company filled with hard news and thus meant the atmosphere was a little bit up and down. Overall, I enjoyed the environment I was working in.

I was extremely pleased with my placement and enjoyed going in and working with everybody on my site.

I would advise others that you get out what you put in, if you ever find yourself without something to do then ask those around you as there is always something. Everyone is very friendly and always happy to help you.
