    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a Mechanical Engineering Placement Student at Tata Steel, I work with both the Asset Improvement Team and the Blast Furnace Planning Team. My role involves supporting ongoing projects aimed at enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and performance of the blast furnace and its associated systems

  • I've developed my technical skills in data analysis and mechanical systems while gaining hands-on experience in asset management and maintenance planning. I've also enhanced my problem-solving abilities and learned to work effectively within cross-functional teams

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At the start of my placement, I wasn't given much responsibility as I was getting familiar with the processes and the team. However, after a couple of months, I began taking on more responsibility, including managing my own projects and contributing to key initiatives within the team

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my placement. My supervisors and team members were always available to help, especially in the beginning as I was learning the ropes. As I gained more confidence and experience, they encouraged me to take on more responsibility, but they were always there for advice and feedback whenever I needed it.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture at Tata Steel was incredibly supportive and collaborative. From day one, I felt welcomed and valued as part of the team. The atmosphere was professional yet friendly, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, continuous learning, and safety. Everyone was approachable and willing to share their knowledge, making it a great environment to grow both personally and professionally

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. It provided a fantastic opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in a real-world setting, tackle interesting challenges, and work alongside a supportive team. The experience was both rewarding and engaging, and I felt a strong sense of accomplishment as I contributed to meaningful projects and learned valuable skills

  • My advice would be to come prepared to embrace a learning mindset and actively engage with the team. Tata Steel values curiosity and initiative, so be ready to ask questions, take on new challenges, and contribute ideas. Additionally, familiarise yourself with the company's operations and culture before you start. Being proactive and open to feedback will help you make the most of your placement and stand out as a valuable team member.
