Overview
Summer internship role in the ILD division of Barnett Waddingham. On a day-to-day basis we are assisting with actuarial modelling, carrying out data processing to investigate mortality experience, and being given hands-on training on how to programme in R, Python and Excel.
Skills
I have built on my existing skills in programming languages such as R and Python. I have also developed transferable skills in Excel which were used in data processing and modelling.
Responsibilities
Yes, although we were assigned and introduced to each task, it was our responsibility to ask for help if needed as well as more work if we were running low.
Support & Guidance
We were guided through every stage of work and had frequent meetings with our mentors and supervisor. We were also invited along to the weekly team meetings.
Culture
All the employees at Barnett Waddingham were very friendly and welcoming. I enjoyed having lunch with all the other interns and working with the graduates. A lot of people came into the office everyday which definitely added to the general atmosphere.
Your Impressions
I found my internship enriching and would recommend it to others looking to apply.
Yes
Research the company to find out what sort of work they do and which division interests you the most. And if you are invited along to the assessment day, to be yourself.
