    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The summer internship programme within the Debt Capital Markets team at MUFG includes a week of training and two rotations. My internship started with a five week rotation with the sustainable finance team before moving to UK bond origination. During my time in sustainable financing I assisted with presentations for client ESG discussions, reviewing key sustainability information included in annual and sustainability reports, and contributed to a lender presentation. I also helped to produce summaries of sustainable finance trends and updates from industry bodies.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Learning and development is a core focus of the internship and interns are given many opportunities to learn new skills including during the training week and through e-learning modules. One key new skill which I developed was how to price a bond using Bloomberg and Excel. I also built on my PowerPoint skills by reviewing and contributing to pitches. In addition, the training week included dedicated time for learning Excel shortcuts and functions, which I then applied to the tasks I was given.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Several of the projects that I was asked to contribute to during the internship were client related, which required me to take real responsibility to ensure the work I was producing was aligned with MUFG's standards. I was also invited to join client calls which were a fantastic opportunity to learn about the timeline of a bond or loan transaction as well as the different teams involved.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The two teams that I joined were supportive and willing to answer any questions that I had on sustainable financing and bond origination or working at MUFG more generally. Within each team I could reach out to colleagues or my manager. I also had a buddy who was very welcoming and a line manager who I would meet with to discuss my objectives for the internship and who provided feedback on my progress.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture at MUFG is inclusive and welcoming. Interns are encouraged to meet with at least eight members of staff over the course of the programme, and I found that people of all experiences were very willing to take the time to grab a coffee and share their advice. Asking questions when you don't understand a concept, or want to build on your knowledge, is also strongly encouraged.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed the internship as I found both of the teams I rotated in to be welcoming and encouraging, and I was provided with an insight into the structure and culture at MUFG. The internship programme offered the opportunity to develop new skills, whether that be presentation or technical skills, and to add value over the course of the ten weeks. I also enjoyed working with the other interns and attending CSR events, where I met people from across the bank.

  • 7. Would you recommend MUFG to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to MUFG
  • I would encourage those applying to MUFG to research the team they are applying to and look at where MUFG has added value for its clients. I would also suggest looking into MUFG's culture principles. In the interview, it is important to demonstrate your interest and willingness to learn new skills and to think innovatively to solve problems.
