Overview
The first week was classroom-based training with an external specialist on banking and finance. Then for the next 9 weeks, I worked on the desk in doing tasks as assigned to me by the team. Talking to different members of the department, as well as having 'coffee chats' with people across the bank was a key part of the internship, and getting to understand the bank's structure and operation.
Skills
Yes, I definitely have enhanced understanding of more technical areas within IB and specifically support functions. I enhanced my competency in excel, as well as more department-specific software. It was also great experience to work and communicate in a corporate environment, and learn what is the expected standard is.
Responsibilities
I was given tasks I had full responsibility over completing, but I was supported by the team in understanding what was required, and getting help throughout. All my work was also quality checked by someone in the team.
Support & Guidance
Strong support and guidance both set up by my line manager, and especially when I took the initiative to ask for help.
Culture
There is a strong culture of respect; even as an intern, more senior employees were generous with their time to explain what they do and give advice. In general, the company culture felt very respectful and supportive.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed the internship. I feel like it was a very valuable way to spend my time, and the amount that I have gotten out of it from a career development perspective is immense. Other interns, and employees on the team were also very friendly, making it a nice place to come into work to.
Yes
Prepare well for any interview and assessment centre. Be thoughtful and respectful throughout, as these are highly valued qualities.
