Overview
Biostatistician role involved using SAS and R to perform statistical analysis on trial data and other trial-related data. A fair amount of quality control work (verifying program outputs). Variety of different projects.
Skills
Learnt basic SAS (opportunity to get a SAS qualification during the placement) and improved my R knowledge. Training related to the drug development and clinical trial process was offered, so gained some understanding of this as well.
Responsibilities
Largely started off with quality control work so limited responsibility, but quickly progressed to tasks with more - e.g. leading a team working on a project.
Support & Guidance
Generally very easy to reach out to people for help - regular catchups with manager, and team members on projects are normally approachable and helpful.
Culture
Never had any issues with anyone at the company while I was there - found it a pleasant place to work. Worth mentioning that most people work remotely most of the time so office can be quite empty at times - can make networking quite difficult but more convenience and flexibility as a trade-off.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed the placement - I developed relevant skills and it was a pleasant place to work. The social side was somewhat lacking in the office but we were able to organise social events with the other placement students to compensate, and I also had the option to work remotely at times myself - the flexibility was very good.
Yes
Work on your programming if applying to one of the more technical roles, and try to make the most of the flexibility available.
