Overview
I interned in the structured credit team, and more specifically within high-yield. My day-to-day involved the continual completion of a 7-week project that involved completing stratifications and creating an Assets and Liabilities Cashflow Model to analyse a previously identified potential investment. I presented this project back to my manager in the final week of the internship. Alongside this, we had a group project regarding the impacts of interest rates on the Asset Management Industry, and we had regular group meetings to compile information for this.
Skills
The experience provided a great opportunity for learning new skills and developing existing ones. It allowed me to gain an understanding for cashflow modelling techniques and begin developing practical skills in this area. The group project provided an opportunity to develop my communication and presentation skills, whilst also being in a collaborative environment. Although I was interning in Structured Credit, I was able to learn new concepts relevant to the other asset classes through talking to various people in the wider firm.
Responsibilities
For the group project, I was responsible for looking specifically at Real Estate, and this involved ensuring that I met with relevant people in Real Estate who could provide useful insights. During my actual role as an intern in Structured Credit (SC), I worked on a past deal meaning that my responsibility was to ensure I was maximising the learning experience for myself.
Support & Guidance
There was a lot of support and guidance throughout the internship, including from your manager, other members of the team, HR team, other interns, and a buddy (grad). If you have a query, it's very easy to find out the answer.
Culture
Company culture was very friendly, and it did not feel as if there was much of hierarchal structure in terms of people being willing to talk with you. Everyone seemed supportive and very willing to help.
Your Impressions
I absolutely loved it, and it has reinforced my goal of pursuing a career in the Asset Management Industry. The placement was exactly what I was hoping for, with a strong focus on learning technical skills, but also allowing you to develop your softer skills.
Yes
Focus on their core purpose and values and consider any experiences you have that may align with these, and then just be yourself.
