    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Depends on the day but I largely manage my own time. I plan my own experiments and conduct them when it suits me best. Some days I'll spend more time at the computer doing data analysis and writing up experiments, other days I'll be in the lab for several hours.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've learnt many new laboratory techniques, such as cell culture, immunofluorescence, western blotting and immunoprecipitation to build on my existing lab skills. I have also enhanced my communication skills, with regular meetings about y project with my supervisor and manager, as well as improving my presentation skills through opportunities to present my work to new and varied audiences.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Definitely. I have been trusted to plan and conduct my own experiments in order to generate important data for the team. The first few months were largely training, where my supervisor was often alongside me helping me learn new skills, both in and out of the lab. After this, I have been responsible for managing my own time and tasks, whilst still being in frequent communication with my supervisor and not being put under any pressure to be perfect.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 5/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • For the first few months, my supervisor put lots of time into teaching me new techniques that I would use throughout the duration of my placement. Since then, I have been given more independence in the lab but my supervisor is still always actively on hand to help me if I'm unsure or trying a new technique. I think the balance between providing supporting and allowing independence has been great.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everybody I've met is very friendly and helpful. The company executives that I've met have been very personable and show interest in what you're doing, which is something I really appreciated. The company offers frequent events, which allow constant networking across the company and in which they often generously provide food and other refreshments. The culture allows for you to do your work to the highest possible standard, without making you feel stressed about it.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • The experience has been incredible. I have learnt so much, scientifically, professionally and personally. I've connected with excellent scientists and excellent people, with whom I will definitely stay in contact with beyond the course of my placement. I have gained great insight into the industry and gained numerous skills that I will carry with me into my future career. We have also been lucky enough to have several social events across the year, allowing us to make friends with other like-minded individuals, such as apprentices, PhD students, graduates etc., many of which we spend with outside of work too, which had been a great perk of this year.

  • 7. Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca
  • Be yourself in the application and assessment centre, as this is the best to demonstrate your skills and personality. Research the company values and think of examples in your past that show you demonstrate these - they don't necessarily have to be scientific or academic examples, they understand that you are undergraduates and don't expect you to have extensive experience. Also, be open to challenge - like me, you may have to move to a new city, work a full time job for the first time, perform techniques you never have before, but it will be well worth it for the experience you will gain.
