Overview
One week of training followed by rotations on two desks for 4 weeks each. While shadowing most of the day, we were given project work to fill the time when other traders/sales were busy. Additionally, mini-projects to help out specific individuals which helped my understanding and analysis skills and presentation skills.
Skills
I have developed, to an enormous extent, my coding ability. Whether that is excel, VBA, python, I have had to become an expert in anything I have been given. In addition, I have had to learn how best to use these tools to deliver insightful insights. Learning how best to present this is also key.
Responsibilities
Desk projects will be used by traders and sales but on a trading floor, the scope for responsibly is limited. That said, I found that asking for more work and analysis projects to do, left people more confident in my ability and so I was given more responsibility to deliver actionable insights.
Support & Guidance
Everyone at the firm, from MD to VP to Associate to Analyst, was incredibly supportive of my growth and development. Getting face time with senior people is clearly prioritized, which lets each individual feel supported, allowing for the steepest learning curve possible. HR are also particularly impressive at delivering clear frameworks for guidance and support.
Culture
I have worked at many a bank... this bank has possibly one of the most supportive environments I have experienced. Management clearly focuses on ensuring all the individuals it hires are not only exceptional at their jobs, but also exceptional at creating a strong collegiate culture. It is testament to the hiring process
Your Impressions
I have absolutely loved every minute, from training week to the final presentation, I have learnt more than I could've possibly imagined and developed life long friends that will form my personal and professional network for many years to come. I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity that has been afforded to me.
Yes
Learning to code is incredibly important. It provides alpha that sets apart not only your application, but also your performance on the desk. It is a simple way that makes a large difference in your capability, and will continue to do so increasingly, in the future. Also, be nice, it makes a difference.
