    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role sits on the trading floor directly integrated on the desk. The element in the sales function is to shadow senior salesperson across the floor on specific asset classes, with the goal to gain full exposure into the product and client type. Tailoring approach is quite important and projects were delivered both on added value on specific processes and theoretical research. There is also a huge component of networking and making sure that we are on point with multiple touch points across the internship, with mentorship and buddy programme.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes. Some basic coding skills and further development on Excel, there is also an element of learning about products and modelling it out using quantitative methods. Herein, I really enjoyed developing the confidence in my own personal development and project delivery work, there is also a lot of development around time management and effective learning.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes - much work was given on trade idea pitches and making sure that we are able to achieve some key KPIs on excel tasks, also an element of longer term tasks. I think there is also a lot to do with making sure we sit down with people and that is also a huge task and involvement in conversations.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was
  • 3/5

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Great. There is a support network with the buddy system and mentorship around the firm. There is also help around people working to make sure we understand stuff and get the basics of how the firm works. I hope this is something that I could take away with basic guidance on premiers.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from your line manager?
  • 5/5

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?
  • 2/5

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture at Nomura is fairly neutral, people are relatively stress in a competitive field. I think the atmosphere is not super helpful for juniors as they do not have the time for additional support. People are open for conversations, but not always readily available in terms of a learning and development perspective so it is not something I was finding for.

  • How would you rate the inclusiveness of the culture?
  • 2/5

  • How would you rate the social opportunities?

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I think I have learned more regarding on how the placement has went with speaking to people who are willing to teach. The content itself was stemmed out from my own personal development and thoughts, rather than coming into an internship whereby support was given from first hand. So I would say I was fairly neutral with the firm and the opportunity.

  • 7. Would you recommend Nomura to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Nomura
  • Make sure to know the edge and understand what you are getting yourself into, I think there is still a lot of stuff to learn when coming into the internship, but not necessarily the best place to start off
