Overview
The internship role involves learning the focus of your desk including its products and clients, and integrating with the team and the business. You'll then be supporting the desk with some daily tasks, and will also work towards a bigger final project which you will present to each desk towards the end of your rotation. This can range from creating and pitching a trade idea, to making a model or tool to help streamline an aspect of the desk's work.
Skills
There has been plenty of opportunity to develop all of the skills that I had wanted to during the internship. Being a member of a sales desk has been paramount in developing interpersonal skills, pitching skills and confidence. Throughout my projects, I've massively improved on both my commercial knowledge and technical knowledge. My coding and technical skills have also improved. There's also plenty of opportunity to network and build connections across the firm.
Responsibilities
There was some responsibility given to us. Some desk tasks needed to be completed by a hard deadline so that colleagues could complete tasks which came afterwards. We were trusted with these. Though, there was no direct client interaction.
Support & Guidance
Support and guidance was certainly available but it is also dependent on how much you seek it. Since desks are busy, it can often be up to you to seek feedback and guidance when needed, rather than it being arranged for you. However, when asked, everyone across the firm was more than happy to help.
Culture
The general atmosphere in the company was very pleasant, especially on the trading floor. Organised networking and social events also helped to build connections with both other interns and employees which helped make our time here more enjoyable. The environment could get stressful during busy periods, but it was never an unpleasant place to work.
Your Impressions
I would recommend the internship. Overall, I found it to be very enjoyable and the learning experience has been incredibly valuable. The internship class was also amazing! I will be leaving with a network and skillset that will help me going forwards into the rest of my career.
Yes
Bring your unique perspectives and ideas to the application process and throughout the internship. Entrepreneurial spirit and new ideas are highly valued in everything you do at the firm. Prepare technicals and competencies for the interviews!
