Overview
Being an intern at Nomura, no two days look the same. Crucially, the content of our days is very much contingent on the desks we are rotating on. A typical day may involve joining the teams morning call to get an idea of the flows the team located in Tokyo have sensed overnight. The remainder of the day primarily consists of completing our overall rotation project, as well as other additional projects members of the desk may have set to aid your learning. Finally, a massive emphasis is imposed upon the idea of networking to broaden our understanding.
Skills
Yes. Technical skills such as Excel/VBA, as well as broadening my comprehension of broader macroeconomic themes.
Responsibilities
As a Global Markets intern, the amount of responsibility we can feasibly have is limited. However, I have had responsibility in creating projects and models now employed by the desk.
Support & Guidance
Nomura has a well established mentor and buddy system. This ensured we had exposure to support and guidance both from our desk, as well as from other business functions
Culture
Positive. It varies between teams, but broadly speaking everybody was incredibly friendly and the atmosphere is defined by its emphasis on collaboration as well as entrepreneurialism.
Your Impressions
A lot. It was an incredibly riveting and enjoyable experience in my opinion. I know my colleagues think similarly
Yes
Make sure you are applying for the right reasons. If you have an interest in Macroeconomics and Global markets more broadly than Nomura is a fantastic place to learn/work at. To succeed in the application, make sure you have a fundamental understanding of current macro/political themes and derivative products.
