Overview
In the first week, we spent the majority of our time in setup and training. This involved Bloomberg training, Excel training and general markets knowledge. During the internship itself, we rotated on two different teams (different for everyone but I was on a solutions and trading team). We worked on two projects on these desks and presented twice to the teams.
Skills
I picked up Excel and VBA skills over my time at Nomura as well as presentation skills. I had never done VBA prior to coming in but found the intern projects an excellent opportunity to hone these skills. Presenting to the team, many of whom were experts in the field I was looking at, was also a great way to learn how to present well and clearly.
Responsibilities
I was given two sheets to build with the intention of being used by both of the teams. Being able to join and add value was an incredible experience and allowed me to understand in depth what a full-time opportunity might look like and how to prepare best for this.
Support & Guidance
We had a buddy and mentor system through the internship, which meant that we constantly had guidance in learning about the products and completing the project. While there was plenty of time for independent learning and growing in our own time, people at Nomura were generally very friendly and would make time to help.
Culture
Overall a very friendly and approachable atmosphere. Even very senior members of teams were happy to make time for interns whether that be for help with projects, for just a general coffee and chatting about the teams or providing puzzles/brain-teasers to get the interns thinking about their desk and the work.
Your Impressions
I greatly enjoyed my time at Nomura. Having been previously at the firm during the spring week, I knew I greatly enjoyed the social atmosphere at Nomura and was greatly looking forward to returning. The work was rewarding overall and felt as though it was useful to the desks I was rotating on.
Yes
I would advise someone else applying to Nomura to ensure that they have interest in the division they are applying to. Knowledge can usually be built on but interest is key - so as long as you have passion and a want to learn, people are more than happy to teach!
