    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role has been very diverse during my internship. I have been given the opportunity to contribute slides for relationship overviews, strategies for clients and complete portfolio management exercises. I have also had access to excellent in house training to supplement my knowledge and to develop the acumen required to succeed in the industry. The opportunities to network up and down the bank and across desks have been numerous and through this I have been able to build a global picture of how the firm functions.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Through my internship I have developed an honed innumerable skills, from networking to research and from excel to PowerPoint. The work I have been allowed to participate in has been an immense learning experience and the immersive environment of the bank has contributed enormously both to my personal and professional development. From my first day on the desk I was encouraged to improve my knowledge in financial products and to obtain a global understanding of how these product teams are interlinked as part of the integrative offering that a relationship with the bank provides.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a large amount of responsibility given my position at the bank. I was given free rein to contribute to strategy papers and reports. Throughout my time at the bank I was given the opportunity to conduct environmental assessments for active names in the portfolio allowing me to form an official opinion which contributes to the deal process. Adding to this, I was allowed to manage a name as a part of the existing portfolio management procedures.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My managers support was integral to my success during the internship. During my initial rotation, my manager pointed me in the direction of papers and internal training that I needed to read and understand in order to form the foundations required to succeed in the internship and the job generally. It was from this base that I further developed my knowledge and network. My manager pointed me in the right direction, providing me with a list of people across the bank’s different product teams that I should speak to in order to develop a global understanding of the firm. Moreover, any questions that I had, my manager was happy to answer and he helped to make me feel at home amongst the team.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company’s atmosphere was warm, welcoming and friendly. When I first joined the bank I felt that I was welcome and was encouraged to participate and ask any questions that I had. Everybody is very considerate and more than happy to explain anything that you do not understand and help you with anything that you need. There is a sense of community amongst the employees which I found to be very uplifting. The culture of having coffee chats across the bank is wonderful and I think it allows any new joiner to find out what they’re interested in, create a network and form an understanding of other sections of the business.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my internship at MUFG, I found that I have never learned so much so quickly. The culture is wonderful and really fosters personal and professional development. The CSR initiatives are excellent and allow for all employees to get involved and to give back. The training provided initially and the additional platforms available on the desk were very engaging. I also enjoyed working with other interns across different divisions to produce a corporate coverage pitch which was given in front of a crowd of employees.

I would ensure that you know precisely why you want to go for the specific role that you have applied for any how you can quantify the skills required with actual experience. Interview preparation and reading the newspaper or keeping up with the markets is essential. I would also review MUFG’s website which has lots of high quality information.
