Overview
I was in the Plant Product Engineering team. This involved solving engineering work request from other functions within the company, eg requesting drawing changes to the drawing office. We would also respond to production line stops and BIS (Before In Service) returns on products and find the cause of failures and make improvements. Also working on "class 4" projects, usually long term and could include the validation of new tools as tools wear over time.
Skills
Being able to communicate clearly and effectively over email definitely.
Responsibilities
Yes definitely, I was working on real life projects that made a difference! Sometimes I questioned why I was entrusted with so much.
Support & Guidance
A lot I had to go seeking for help but there was always someone willing to help.
Culture
everyone was super nice and friendly, saying good morning even if you didn't know them. Also people would actually go out of their way to help even when they were very busy themselves.
Your Impressions
I really enjoyed it, it gave me firsthand insight to what a career in engineering would look like.
Yes
The department you're in will really shape your experience, so choose wisely. But even if you're not in your top choice, give your best and talk to other placements students and actual employees in other departments to help you figure out what's best for you. You don't want to end up in a job after uni with low satisfaction so use this placement to figure out what you can see yourself doing long term.
