Overview
My role was as a software development intern, meaning that I worked on a project with a real client, and on a daily basis I would complete development tickets distributed by my line manager. (as well as occasionally offering suggestions on project direction via ideation sessions)
Skills
I have learned how to use Git, as well as learning typescript and several libraries for it including react, jest, and zod. beyond this I have gained a greater appreciation for clean code and pair programming, and even got some experience with presentation and client interaction.
Responsibilities
Whilst interns were not responsible for drafting requirements, or designing the system, we were ultimately responsible for the on time and high quality completion of the product.
Support & Guidance
We worked directly next to our line manager, who was always willing to answer questions, or offer coding advice (even navigating pair programming on some occassions), and beyond this we had weekly check ins with a company mentor, numerous inductions, and two full weeks of training on company coding standards and the projects tech stack, prior to the start of the internship proper.
Culture
The general culture was relaxed and welcoming, with employees eager to offer guidance and include interns in social events, and company meetings. One thing I really appreciated was that the company took deliberate steps to prevent interns from competing, and insisted that we not work overtime, or skip breaks. I feel this relatively stress free environment made me more productive, and it is easy to see why the company has such high employee retention.
Your Impressions
I enjoyed it immensely, I feel that we were given meaningful work (whilst having room to make mistakes). I believe that the oppurtunities for learning were huge, the culture around work life balance was excellent, and there were several optional social events each week.
Yes
Be aware that the company looks for potential as much as experience, so make sure to make clear what distinguishes you and your learning habits individually. plus the culture of work life balance and morale is such that the company will take greater interest in a person that can show themselves to have a healthy and balanced work ethic (and diverse out of office interests).
