Overview
My role was to help out in a variety of engineering applications such as hazard studies, instrument verifications, and safety improvement.
Skills
I have leant and developed many skills whilst being at Tata Steel, ranging from engineering skills such as problem solving to interpersonal skills when networking.
Responsibilities
I was not given much responsibility during my placement. Much of the work I was given was to aid another person and write up documents, however I found this to be a positive experience as I got to learn from senior engineers.
Support & Guidance
Personally I would have preferred much more support and guidance, especially during the first 3 months of my placement. I found it hard to settle in without having a close employee to work with.
Culture
Every person who I came across at the company was very nice and chatty. The moral declined a little when decommissioning took priority however everyone remained super friendly.
Your Impressions
Overall I have enjoyed my placement, however there have been times where it was very slow for me and i did not have any work to do for weeks. Looking at the wider picture, I am very grateful for the opportunities i have had, from going on site to see the steelmaking process and working with several new people. I have not only gained engineering knowledge but also I have learnt about my personal interests.
No
Get involved and dont be afraid to ask other employees for help.
