    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked in S&S British Gas Fleet and Fuel team, where I was able to make an automatic Power BI report that looked at British Gas Engineer daily transactions. The report focused on cost by product, VAT reclaim, diesel expenditure and I created a tracker of diesel price Centrica vs the market as well as the tracker for suspicious transactions. Then used Excel to forecast diesel cost for the company for 2024 and that became part of the teams overall expenditure forecast.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I got very lucky with my team. I was given a project that I could build from the ground up and learn all skills from basic to advanced functions in Power BI. The project contributed to both the 2024 diesel cost forecast and provided needed evidence for the van upgrade. At the same time the project did not have tight deadlines so I was given enough time to learn and make mistakes.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a good amount of support, I was assigned a buddy to help me through any questions I had and he was very appropriately chosen as he built Power BI reports all the time so could answer my questions easily.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company had a more relaxed atmosphere than I expected. Most work strictly 9-5 and there are only a few cars left in the office car park after 5.30. Due to the office location most of the staff work remotely with 2 days in office. I found this very good as I could stay home most days so that I did not have to spend time travelling 2 hours but at the same time I could come in to get faster help from the team and get more insight about the company. Best of both worlds. The company is also very invested in your development, we received public speaking practice, energy industry insight talks, online learning material and finance receives ACA tutoring and paid exams on the grad scheme.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed it, my work was challenging and contributed significantly to the team as I was never given irrelevant tasks. At the same time, I was not given strict deadline and was given time for the learning process. I was given enough support from my assigned buddy, manager, team and the company in general. The company also organised trips to other offices with most interns (some even went to Ireland), as well as a few social events and included meals. I managed to go to Leicester with my team where I spent time getting to know them outside of just work and I was able to build friendships with other interns through the charity challenge, volunteering, social events etc.

  • 7. Would you recommend Centrica to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
  • The emphasis during the application process is being good at public speaking, confidently expressing yourself and your ability to learn and grasp concepts. Many interns did not have pre existing experience with their stream and it was well accepted that it is a learning process. You complete a numerical and psychometric test, as well as respond to financial report in the interview. Its about being proactive, polite in the interview and having good commercial awareness.
