The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my time at IBM, both the social and work side to the placement.
Made to feel like a valued member of the team from my first day in the office.
If I ever had a problem or question, my managers and team were always happy to help and give me any guidance and advice that they had.
My role was in finance so my work load differed depending on the time of the month. Some days were very slow and some were incredibly busy but on average the work load was just right. I never felt that there was too much to handle.
I was very satisfied with the level of responsibility I was given. It was more than I expected and felt that my opinion and input were genuinely taken in to account.
Whilst some of the skills I have learnt are specific to IBM systems, the majority of the skills I have learnt will definitely make a big impact on finishing my degree and towards interviews and jobs in the future. There are plenty of opportunities to develop a wide variety of skills that can be used well beyond my placement and degree.
The Company
In my office there were quiet days and busy days due to team members having alternative working arrangements but there was always the option to sit in another office.
There is a dedicated team dealing with placement students and this was brilliant although on occasion there were communication problems between them and team and task managers.
There was a number of various different training and online education systems to take advantage of and a number of skill broadening/improving sessions held by the company for IT's to take part in.
Flexi Time

Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
There is a system in place that allows IT's to be 'fast tracked' in to Graduate schemes, meaning that you are able to skip the initial rounds of the assessment center, however, there are no jobs in finance in the UK. You can apply for jobs abroad within finance.
The Culture
There is a HUGE intake of IT's each year. Similar to starting university, everyone is in the same situation and everyone is happy to meet people and go out.
Portsmouth - rent was cheap and going out was generally cheap depending on the night etc.
Very student-y area so the nightlife was lively, always something going on.
IBM has numerous clubs to join from sports to general hobbies.
